Most tidily trimmed, the thuja hedge protects the homeowner and his possessions from the unwelcome gaze of his neighbours. If, in general, privacy thus achieved is associated with a sense of personal security, the relinquishing of a free view into the outer world stands for the loss of freedom. By trimming the thuja hedge to make the word deutsch (german), Lucia Dellefant ironically calls into question the customary notion of privacy.
